The Demons suffered a second defeat in a month after winning eight in a row at the start of the year. After a minute's silence for the late Harry Parkin, the loss came at the hands of their nearest rivals. Richmond had lost four in a row to slip outside the four, and as such looked like easy prey for the unbeaten visitors - but the home side narrowly prevailed.
Best were Roberts, Reilly and Mueller. Lewis had a broken nose.
The loss didn't cost the Demons too badly, two of the other top four teams lost as well as fifth placed South Melbourne.
