Essendon entered the game as red-hot favourites, and they managed to restrict Melbourne to two goalkickers but for most of the game were the inferior side and struggled to win in the last minute
The visitors were wasteful in the first quarter, having two more scoring shots but going in three points behind. Essendon outscored them by one major again in the second, before Melbourne cut the gap back to three points in the third term when they took control. Brereton ran riot, and put Melbourne in front with his fifth goal.
It was the last Melbourne would kick. Deep into the last quarter the margin was still under a goal before future Melbourne player Percy Ogden kicked the winner.
Best were Kennedy, Hickey and Harris. Harris also suffered an injury.
