Despite having lost three of their last four matches the Demons still played off for first place with the Eagles courtesy of their strong win over St Kilda the previous week with a chance to get their season back on track.
The two sides had built up a heated rivalry in recent seasons, but in front of a crowd not befitting a top of the table clash the Demons were second best all day. They controlled the midfield, and it gave their forwards enough opportunities to kick a winning score despite missing key players like Peter Sumich and Brett Heady.
Ironically the controversial Chris Lewis, who had been one of the key players in the rivalry between the two sides after biting Todd Viney in Round 16, 1991, was a key reason for the Eagles' win with five goals after being moved forward to cover the absence of Sumich.
The dangerous Allen Jakovich and David Schwarz were restricted to a goal each, and West Coast were the better side in all aspects of the game. Jakovich was dragged halfway through the third quarter. Only a relatively even last term kept the margin respectable.
Best were Lyon, Lovell and B. Lovett. Once again Jim Stynes suffered an injury, this time to his knee, but once again he backed up the next week.
