The Demons debuted three first gamers in "Youth Round", and MacDonald from the Brisbane Lions. Before the bounce the crowd were treated to motorcycle stunts by the Crusty Demons of Dirt, but after a promising first couple of minutes all the excitement in the first term came from Hawthorn running riot against their less experienced opponents.
The Demons first goal came through Mark Jamar in the second term, by which time the game was already over. Brad Green provided some resistance in the second half when he returned to the ground after being carried off in the first quarter, but Hawthorn extended their margin to 80 points early in the third term.
From there on they took their foot off the gas and allowed Melbourne to make the match respectable. First and second draft picks Tom Scully and Jack Trengove had positive debuts, and Ricky Petterd managed to stand up in the forward line during the last term.
Best were McDonald, Jamar and McKenzie.
