Touted as a potential top ten draft pick from his early teenage years, Scully was named half-forward flank in the 2008 Under 18 All-Australian team but was ineligible to enter that year's draft because of his age.

Given that he would have gone highly in that draft it was no surprise that he opened 2009 as the near consensus pick for number one. A successful season was marred in September by a fractured patella in the Dandenong Stingrays' Preliminary Final win, forcing Scully out of the TAC Cup Grand Final.

Despite some suggestions later in the year that the Demons might take Jack Trengove instead, the matter was resolved when Melbourne 'earned' the top two picks in the draft by virtue of winning less than five games in two consecutive seasons.

In December 2009 Scully was presented with the number 31 jumper made famous by Ron Barassi. After building impressively early in his debut season, Scully had his break out game in Round 7 2010 against the Western Bulldogs on a wet and windy Saturday night.

On the big stage of Friday Night Football at the 'G', Scully gathered a game high 39 possessions to gain the round's Rising Star nomination, and at the end of the year he was 2nd overall in the award behind unanimous winner, Daniel Hannebury from Sydney.

Missing the start of the season with a knee injury Scully played just ten games, but his entire year was dogged by the question of whether he would accept a lucrative offer to join the Greater Western Sydney team for 2012.

Melbourne countered with a large offer but it still didn't approach the funds on offer from the AFL backed new league side and in September he accepted the offer to join the Giants for the 2012. Melbourne received two first round compensation selections for losing Scully to the Giants.
