Despite transport strikes, a respectable crowd turned up to Princes Park to watch football's two oldest teams battle in the first round of the season.

Carlton had just missed the top four in 1946, but they were too good for that year's runners up in a fast, exciting game that was a cut above most nervy first round encounters.

After a poor start with Jack Mueller or Stan Rule the Demons improved after quarter time despite losing Fred Fanning early in the first quarter but were kept in the match in the first half by Carlton's poor kicking for goal.

Cordner, McMahen and Mitchell were best.
