Melbourne opened their season against St Kilda for the second year in a row, and unlike their encounter in the first game of 1904 they came out on the winning side. The ground was hard and fast, and weather conditions better resembled cricket season than the winter game which helped the sides put on an entertaining game. Melbourne only had two new recruits, while St Kilda played with six.
The locals kicked with the wind first and got the only goal of the term, but when St Kilda had their opportunity in the second they were outscored three goals to two. Both the Redleg goals came at the end of the term. Despite a hot start for the Seasiders, Melbourne narrowly extended their lead in the third quarter and had kicked away to a match winning lead in the last before St Kilda mounted a belated comeback. Their chances of overhauling their hosts foundered when they missed a number of easy shots.
Best were Langley, M. Gardner and Purse.
