Joined along with twin brother Henry in 1971 but soon returned to the amateurs after being left on the bench in Reserves). In ((1972 he played Reserves for Prahran in the VFA, before being promoted to the senior list for 1973. He played 20 Reserves games in total.

Both Michael and Henry represented Australia in athletics at the 1973 Maccabiah Games in Israel.

In 1973 he rejoined Ajax. He took over as captain in 1975 and won that year's E section best and fairest. That year he became the first E Section player to be chosen to play in the Victorian amateur representative side. It was one of five club best and fairests, in every grade from B to E - and between 1975 and 1979 he won the competition best and fairest in four different grades. He captained the side to the 1975 E and 1979 B Grade flags. The best on ground medal in the VAFA C Section Grand Final is named in his honour.

Ritterman captain/coached St Bernards in 1982 and 1983, and was playing coach of Ajax in 1990, remaining there until 1992.
