Tuesday 24 May - Richmond Cricket Ground
Melbourne 2.3, 8.5, 8.6, 8.12
Richmond 1.0, 1.1, 4.5, 6.5
Melbourne win by 2 goals
Goalkickers: Harry Graham 2, Wiseman 2, Wilson 2, McKenzie 1, Herbert Fry 1
The Queen's Birthday match commenced at 11am, and a large holiday crowd turned out to see the match. Captain Aitken was thwarted in an early attempt on goal, and Melbourne were soon put on the back foot as the home side attacked. Richmond ultimately got the first goal from a quick kick out of a scrimmage.
From the restart Melbourne soon equalised through Harry Graham, and after two easy opportunities were missed by Howes a second goal was scored by one of the two McKenzies.
They should have had more but their forwards were unable to capitalise on the excellent work of the backs and followers. Richmond started the second quarter determined to make them pay but they soon wilted and when Herbert Fry booted the third of the game they fell apart and found themselves 8-1 down at half time with five goals in 15 minutes.
With the game almost out of their reach Richmond started the second half with three goals in a row but were still four down at the last change. The home team had their chances in the final term but saw too many attacks break down when the ball landed with their forwards or half-forwards. They managed two goals more but had left themselves too much work - and even Melbourne kicking six behinds in the final term didn't cost them victory.
Best were H. Graham, J. Graham and Wilson.
