May 1892 Match vs North Melbourne

Saturday 14 May - MCG

Melbourne 2.2, 6.3, 8.5, 11.9
North Melbourne 2.2, 4.3, 4.4, 5.7

Melbourne win by 6 goals

Goalkickers: Harry Graham 5, J. Graham 3, Howes 1, Wilson 1, O'Dea 1

In good weather for football, and on a perfect MCG surface Melbourne met their first metropolitan senior opposition for the year and came out on top easily. A "fairly large" crowd turned out to see the game, and they weren't disappointed despite the lopsided end result. Melbourne wore a new boot, where "the uppers are made of canvas" and featured a shield of leather over the ankles to prevent injury.

North won the toss and did all the early attacking, scoring two behinds and then the first goal. It took until Melbourne's newly recruited goalscoring combination of O'Dea and Graham to combine for the Reds to score the equaliser. The game turned in their favour then and they went in front, but late in the quarter North equalised.

After exerting themselves to keep the game level in the first quarter the visitors fell away badly in the second. Instead of forcing the play towards Melbourne's goal they were on the defensive most of the time, but still managed to level the scores at four goals apiece at one point before their opponents kicked away again.

The Grahams combined for a goal apiece in the third, and Melbourne added another three goals to one in the last to register a comfortable win.

Best were H. Graham, Fox and McKenzie.
