Initially recruited from the WAFL by Geelong after also training at Richmond, the ruck-rover/defender suffered a dislocated elbow in a practice match which delayed his start to the season. Gandini was named by the Cats for their Round 3, 1986 match with the suggestion that he would have played the previous week if his clearance from Perth had come through in time but didn't play. He was cleared to Melbourne midway through the season, playing the last five games of 1986 before returning to Western Australia.

After four games with Perth in early 1987 he transferred to Swan Districts for 51 games. Midway through 1988, Gandini walked out and joined Goldfields side Kambalda. He returned to Swan Districts in 1989 and played in a premiership the next year. He was expected to retire after the 1990 season but remained with Swan Districts, but only played one more game in the opening round of 1991 before leaving the club after a dispute with his coach.

In 1992, Gandini trained with Perth in the pre-season, and was on their list in 1993 but did not play another WAFL, coaching local side Applecross in 1993, then Claremont Reserves in 1994.
