The brother of David Cockatoo-Collins was drafted to fulfil a pledge the club had made to the boys' mother that they wouldn't be separated. A third brother Che played with Essendon and Port Adelaide. The running defender played limited football in his draft year due to a broken collarbone suffered in an Under 18s game.
After Round 4, 1997, Cockatoo-Collins was involved in the first racial vilification case to go before the AFL tribunal. Todd Curley of the Western Bulldogs was ultimately found not guilty of the charge.
Cockatoo-Collins never played more than four games in a season. In 1999 he missed the start of the year due to a broken wrist, and didn't play a game before being delisted.
