The brother of Demon David and Essendon/Port Adelaide player Che, was drafted by the Demons to fulfil a pledge they'd made to their mother that David and Donald wouldn't be separated. He hadn't played much football in his draft year due to breaking his collarbone playing an Under 18s game.
After the Round 4, 1997 match against the Western Bulldogs, Cockatoo-Collins historically featured in the first ever racial vilification case to go before the AFL tribunal. Todd Curley was ultimately found not guilty of the charge.
Despite his lofty draft position he never found a permanent place in the team and was delisted after the 1998 season.
