The brother of Donald Cockatoo-Collins joined Melbourne with the compensation selection they received from losing Jason Norrish to Fremantle. Cockatoo-Collins played Reserves in 1995, before being promoted to the senior side the next year. After appearing in the opening match of 1996 he returned to the seconds for four matches before playing the rest of the year at Wesley College.
It took until Round 17 for Cockatoo-Collins to return to the seniors, and he only played one game. Later, a broken hand ended his season. After the Round 4, 1997 Reserves game, Cockatoo-Collins was involved in the first racial vilification case to go before the AFL Tribunal. Todd Curley of the Western Bulldogs was ultimately found not guilty.
Cockatoo-Collins was delisted after Round 4, 1998, allowing Matthew Bishop to be promoted to the senior list.
