Played a solitary game in the first season of the VFL as the then youngest man to appear for the club. He also played for his school side during the year.

After his sole VFL game he disappeared from senior ranks until 1903, in which time he served as a rifleman during the Boer War.

Godby returned to the league when he was cleared to Essendon in May 1903 and turned out twice for them.

Also played cricket for the East Melbourne club.
