After big home wins against West Coast and Gold Coast, Melbourne played a prime time home game at neutral Princes Park and avenged their record defeat against the Bombers a year earlier. Three quick goals in the opening quarter set up a lead they successfully defended, holding Essendon to one goal until late in the last quarter. Two quick goals cut the margin to 14 but Essendon had left themselves too much work to do.
Best were Chaplin, Harris, and McNamara. Goldrick left the game with illness in the final quarter and Heath dislocated her finger.
