Back on the MCG for the first time since a 2016 exhibition match, Melbourne overcame wet conditions and a slow start to qualify for their first AFLW Grand Final.
Unable to get their attacking game going in the opening term, the Demons were forced to rely on a solid defence and wasteful attack by the Lions. Melbourne got the first goal through Alyssa Bannan, but were pegged back to level scores at half time.
The game was won in the third, where Bannan, Lauren Pearce and Eliza McNamara all kicked goals to give their side an 11 point lead. Bannan's third seemingly made the result safe, before two late Brisbane goals left the margin under a straight kick with 30 seconds left. Melbourne held on to win.
Best were Paxman, Bannan and McNamara.
