The night was declared "Olympic Night", with athletes appearing and the AFL donating all gate takings to the Melbourne 1996 campaign to host the Summer Games.

In their first match for the season the Demons got off to a fast start, keeping Footscray goalless in the first term, and kicking four goals before the Dogs registered their lone score in the first term.

The Bulldogs' forward line improved, coming back from 36 points down midway through the second quarter to cut the margin to 15 early in the third before Melbourne pulled away again.

Best were Lyon, Beveridge and B. Lovett. Alan Johnson was carried off with a hamstring injury and Matthew Febey with a season-ending broken left leg/knee injury.

Melbourne had received a bye through the first round as defending champions, and the win set up a Semi Final against Essendon.

The first quarter was reportedly longer than a usual night match because the timekeepers allegedly forgot to turn the clock on in the early minutes.
