The night was declared "Olympic Night", with athletes appearing and the AFL donating all gate takings to the Melbourne 1996 campaign.

In their first match for the season the Demons got off to a fast start, keeping Footscray goalless in the first term, and kicking four goals before the Dogs registered their lone score in the first term.

The Bulldogs' forward line improved, coming back from 36 points down midway through the second quarter to cut the margin to 15 early in the third.

The Bulldogs then mounted a comeback, and cut the margin to 15 points early in the third term before Melbourne pulled away again.

Best were Lyon, Beveridge and B. Lovett. Alan Johnson was carried off with a hamstring injury and Matthew Febey with a season ending broken left leg/knee injury.

Melbourne had received a bye through the first round as defending champions, and the win set up a Semi Final against Essendon.
