June 1885 match vs University

Saturday 13 June - University Ground

University 1.6
Melbourne 2.8 (half time 1-1)

Melbourne win by 1 goal

Goalkickers: Coulson 1, Unknown 1

Melbourne's record against 'new' VFA clubs had been deplorable, having lost every match against Fitzroy and Richmond since the clubs had been admitted but they were too good for the weakest of the new clubs and registered a second win for the season.

For the second week the Reds prevailed in poor conditions on a sloppy ground, and registered several behinds before the students had their first. The wind was blowing across the ground, not helping either side but making goalscoring difficult University then improved their play and only desperate defence kept them out twice in the early minutes.

Eventually the home team broke through with the first goal, and despite Melbourne's efforts to equalise they were repelled by the student defenders Coulson finally got their first goal and the clubs went into half time level.

University firmly played for a draw in the second half. Melbourne got a late goal to win, but it was hardly a confidence boosting victory.
