The defending night premiers kicked three goals in the first 10 minutes, but failed to score for the rest of the first quarter as the Bombers closed the gap to one point. The sides remained close until just before half time when Essendon kicked two late goals to lead by 13 at the break. They ran away with six goals to one in the third quarter to qualify for the final.
Jamie Duursma suffered a serious knee injury and didn't play another senior game.
