After a strong showing against Collingwood the previous Saturday, Melbourne showed none of the same dash and the 16 point margin flattered them. North didn't play well, but Melbourne's persistent over-use of handball cost them. They led early, but when North hit the lead in the second quarter they weren't headed again.
New Demon Peter Moore gathered his teammates at three quarter time for a pep talk, but they were unable to overcome the 22 point deficit. They'd also been subjected to a blast from Ron Barassi, who pleaded for his players to show more discipline in the final term. His calls were barely heeded, and the Demons only shaved eight points off the margin.
Best were Elshaug, Bamblett and Wilson. Dale Dickson - a late replacement for Gerard Healy - was injured by a bump in the first minute and carried off. He returned to the game in the second half.
