North Melbourne win by 16 points

Goalkickers: Elshaug 3, Bamblett 3, Flower 1, Giles 1, Templeton 1

After a strong showing against Collingwood the previous Saturday, Melbourne showed none of the same dash and the 16 point margin flattered them. North didn't play well, but Melbourne's persistent over-use of handball cost them. They led early, but when North hit the lead in the second quarter they weren't headed again.

New Demon Peter Moore gathered his teammates at three quarter time for a pep talk, but they were unable to overcome the 22 point deficit.

Best were Elshaug, Bamblett and Wilson. Dale Dickson was injured by a bump in the first minute and carried off.

Selected team
B: O'Brien, Seddon, Richards
HB: Williams, Icke, Ellingworth
C: O'Donnell, Wilson, Wright
HF: Bamblett, Giles, Flower
F: Healy, Templeton, Battiston
Foll: Moore, Jarrott, Elshaug
Int: McLean, Zantuck
Emg: Dickson, Connolly, Cordner

There was a late change with Dickson entering the final side.
