Recruited from a Teachers' College in the Commonwealth Association league, Dimsey first attended Richmond training but wasn't convinced of his chances of getting a game there and joined Melbourne instead. This prompted the Tigers to name him in their side for the Round 17, 1913 match with the Redlegs. Melbourne also named him and his chose them but only played two games.

In 1915 Dimsey was cleared to South Melbourne but never played a match. In July that year he enlisted in the Army and went to war.
