Originally promoted to the side as a half-forward, Dickson was a regular in his first two seasons before slowly falling out of favour. He appeared just ten times over his last two years with the Demons.
He was one of three Melbourne players sent to the Brisbane Bears at the end of 1986 where he played in their first ever match, and he remained at Brisbane until the end of the 1989 season.
Dickson remained in Queensland and later served as CEO of the Gold Coast City Council.
His uncle Des played for Hawthorn.
