After three wins in a row, Melbourne lost their first game in a month after giving premiership contenders Hawthorn a scare for three quarters. They failed to make their chances count in the first half, kicking 2.7 in the second quarter despite having most of the play, but were only a point behind at the last change. After Hawthorn kicked early goals, Daniel Turner was sent forward to try and generate scores but his absence in defence allowed the Hawks to run away with an easy victory.

Best were Langford, Bowey and Gawn. Koltyn Tholstrup replaced Matthew Jefferson in the third quarter.
