St. Kilda had the best defence in the league so it was no surprise that they managed to restrict the Demons to a low score and win comfortably.
In windy conditions both sides struggled in the first quarter, but the second term saw the Saints master the conditions better en route to 6.4 while Melbourne managed just a point. John Beckwith moved his players around to try and stir things up. Greg Parke went to full-forward to swap with Ross Dillon
Defender Paul Rowlands had been dropped after his poor performance against Richmond the week before, but he might have been worth a try against dominant Saint Allan Davis who booted 5.8 for the day.
Parke and Dillon, Melbourne's best throughout the season to date, kicked four goals between them but were well held. Stan Alves was the Demons best on ground. Hardeman (illness) was replaced by Feldmann at half time. Hardeman was said to have battled diarrhea during the first half, and Peter Keenan later claimed John Beckwith made a half time speech saying "I've got one who just shit himself, one who's having a go. I've got seventeen who should shit themselves and are not having a go." Ray Carr was an unused reserve.
