First Goal
Des Campbell (3rd game)
Both ruckmen, Peter Keenan and John Letcher were unable to be considered due to injury as was Trevor Rollinson. Paul Callery and Robert McKenzie were omitted. Rod Payne was promoted for his senior debut and Des Campbell was recalled to a half-forward flank. Stan Alves also came back after recovering from a back injury.
Paul Rowlands, who had been the best on ground in Round 2 after beating Peter Hudson, was criticised for his performance on Rex Hunt, who kicked 6.7 goals and was dropped the next week, while at the other end the Demon spearhead Ray Carr was struggling to rack up a handful of kicks for the day.
There was little else between the two sides, but the Tigers' dominance in the forward line lifted them over the lackluckstre Demons. Eight goals in 20 minutes in the second quarter gave them the edge and they never surrendered it again. Melbourne got back to within striking distance on several occassions but each time the Tigers drew away again.
Greg Parke was Melbourne's only winner in the forward line, but other than some cameo appearances from Greg Wells and Graham Molloy he had little assistance.
Best were Parke, Wells and Clark. Stan Alves was replaced in the selected side by Jennings due to a back injury. Bourke was replaced at three-quarter time by Sinclair due to a bruised knee. Dillon suffered a sprained ankle and Molloy a corked leg.
