Essendon made a number of team changes and it resulted in greatly improved form compared to their recent performances. Melbourne had easily beaten South Melbourne a week earlier and as such were expected to deal easily with their out of form opposition, but a combination of Essendon's improvement, the wind and congested play brought them down.
The home side failed to take advantage of the wind in the first quarter, wasting six behinds, but defended so well in the second that Melbourne were restricted to just three points. Despite the Reds' backline being their best unit, Essendon shot away to a match winning lead in the third and defended stoutly again into the breeze in the last.
best were J. Gardiner, Mills and Fitzaptrick.
