The Demons made the tricky journey to Geelong and came out as the only unbeaten side in the competition. It wasn't without some nervous moments though. Geelong too were playing for the right to go 5-0. Melbourne was once again unconvincing, but at least this time they did enough to get the points against one of the top teams in the competition.
The win was set up in the first quarter. Kicking with a strong breeze Geelong was held to just 1.2 in the first term, whereas the Demons racked up 5.6 in the second. Doug Wade, playing his first game for the year, didn't have a kick until halfway through the third quarter.
Melbourne were sloppy but the victory had been set up by the long break. Polly Farmer was dominating the ruck, but John Townsend and Hassa Mann were dominant when the ball hit the ground.
The Cats rallied in the final term but it was too late. Melbourne were top of the table on their own.
Best were Townsend, Kenneally and Mann. Groom injured his thigh muscle. He was replaced by Miller in the first quarter. Townsend was replaced by Emselle in the final term.
