Melbourne beat several league clubs to the defender's signature after he was a 1963 state amateur player. He made the list for 1964 but it was a development year as he built his frame and waited in the Reserves for an opportunity in Melbourne's strong backline.

Rowe was lucky to make it to the league, six years earlier he'd been advised to give the game away after suffering slipped cartilages in both legs within a few weeks. He was dropped from the senior list before the 1965 season but fought back to play eight games. After two disposals in his debut as a reserve he failed to register a possession in the next three games.

In 1967 Rowe qualified as a teacher and was posted to Nurmurkah. Unable to sustain the travel to and form Melbourne to play, he was appointed playing coach of Shepparton. He led them to a premierships in 1968 and 1969. In 1971 he was offered an assistant coaching job at Melbourne but as he wanted to keep playing he instead captain/coached VFA side Frankston until 1974. He went overseas the next year, returning for a brief stint with Frankston in 1976.

Rowe returned to Melbourne to serve on the committee between 1978 and 1985, and was recruiting manager in 1983, playing a role in the recruiting of Irish players. He was named a life member in 1985.
