Two big losses in a row spurred the Demons on to thrash the Hawks on their own turf. Hawthorn might have won the scoring 9.6 to 8.7 in the middle two quarters, but they were demolished 11.4 to 0.7 in the opening and closing terms.
In the third quarter the Hawks had even crept to within 13 points, and their hard tackling tactics were starting to unsettle their opponents. They relaxed though, and the Demons got two late goals to make the three-quarter time margin more comfortable. Then the last quarter avalanche came, and the Demons ran out easy winners.
Best for the Demons were Dixon, Townsend and Emselle. Lord (ankle) was replaced by Vearing in the last quarter.
