Wingman/centre who had played in the 1959 Victorian schoolboys side. Leitch debuted in Melbourne's Under 19s in 1962, and was named the best first year player. He made the senior side for the first time in 1964, staying on the bench for the full game twice. He made his on-field debut in 1965, but after playing 10 games, Leitch was dropped from Melbourne's list in the 1966 pre-season. He trained with Fitzroy, before joining Tasmanian side Scottsdale.

Leitch played in four premierships with Scottsdale, including the undefeated 1973 team that won the state championship. He played for Tasmania at the 1972 national carnival, and made the All Australian side. Leitsch retired after the 1973 season. He later coached Bridport and a North East representative team in 1985

He was later inducted into the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame.
