Under the coaching of ex-Melburnian Bert Chadwick, Hawthorn had been steadily improving during the year - and for the third week in a row Melbourne were forced to come back from a three-quarter time deficit to win.
On a greasy ground with a sloppy centre the young Hawthorn side that had won three in a row more than matched their more experienced opponents, holding them out until the last few minutes. Good football was impossible on the quagmire of a ground, and with the ball as heavy as lead and slippery as ice it helped dragged Melbourne down to the Mayblooms' level.
In the first quarter Hawthorn had more of the play, but their forwards struggled to get past Melbourne's tough backline and only managed a narrow lead. At the other end Hawthorn's defence held firm, and when Melbourne got chances they messed them up. Taylor kicked four behinds and once into the man on the mark in the first quarter alone.
It was Hawthorn's chance to be wasteful in the third quarter, attacking constantly but only managing two goals to open an 11 point lead. When Robert C Johnson moved forward from the ruck in the last quarter and kick three last quarter goals it was difference between the two sides. The victory was hardly comprehensive, but it kept Melbourne inside the top four having played every other team in the competition once.
Ogden, Johnson and Deane were best.
