Having got their season back on track with a win the previous Saturday, Melbourne put in another low scoring performance in Geelong and lost without being disgraced.
Kicking with a light breeze the visitors had the better of the game early despite not kicking a goal in the first term. Geelong were crowding the ball too much and struggling to handle the ball. Their ruck was also being beaten comfortably, but Geelong's defence kept them at bay for the whole term. With the star Pivotonian defender Burns away from his post being patched up by trainers at the start of the second quarter Pirrie got a goal, but Geelong hit back soon after.
Geelong had a four point lead at half time, but were now the better team and opened up a good lead. In the last quarter Melbourne had chances but found it impossible to breach the local goal for even a behind.
Best were Wood, Herring and Illingworth.
Notes
The Geelong Advertiser list a Melbourne wingman called "Lowden" being absent.
