Despite leading for most of the game the Demons ran out of steam in the last quarter and let the Blues run over the top of them. After keeping the home side to one scoring shot in the second quarter they conceded 7.7 to 2.2 in the last to throw the match away.
The Demons had gone on as heavy underdogs but they stuck with the Blues most of the day before falling apart in the last. Stan Alves suffered two big hits for the day, one in each of the second and last quarters.
Best were Sullivan, Hardeman and Wells. Tony Dullard was reported for striking and suspended for two matches. Lyons was replaced by Osborne in the last quarter. Campbell was an unused reserve.
Bob Skilton was carpeted for saying in a TV interview the next day that if Dullard (and Carlton's Mark Maclure who had also been reported) were suspended there was no justice in football. He apologised and suffered no further sanctions.
