The better-fancied visitors started with a slight breeze and took full effect to boot three goals with shots early in the first quarter. From there Melbourne's defenders performed better, but they still conceded two more goals to be five behind before scoring a major from their first effort on goal.

With St Kilda ruckman Vic Cumberland temporarily off the field with an injury during the second quarter Melbourne made a brief run and held their opposition goalless but only managed two themselves, and when Cumberland return late in the quarter the Seasiders were quickly back in charge.

A four goal to nil third quarter confirmed St Kilda as winners if they could defend the last quarter as they had the previous three, and despite not managing a goal in the fourth quarter they were comfortable winners.

Best were Sowden, Purse and Young.
