Despite having registered a surprise win the previous Saturday Melbourne were still underdogs, and chased the heavily favoured South all day but were beaten by a quicker team with a better system.

Melbourne were better early in greasy conditions but when South settled they took a lead into the long break. The home side hit the front again in the third quarter, and had their chances in the last but could only score 1.2 despite peppering the forward line.

Best were Arnold, Collins and Smeaton. McLean replaced Thompson (ankle) in the last quarter and McMahon was unused 20th man. Noel McMahen suffered a heavily bruised shoulder.
