Two teams who had played finals then bombed out in 1951 came together trying to keep their 1952 season alive, and it was Melbourne who came out on top.
In cold, wet and windy conditions North led at half time, but a third quarter switch to long kicking tactics helped the Demons charge back into the game and kick six goals to one in the third quarter - including 5.1 to nothing in the first 15 minutes. They didn't add another goal after that but had already built a winning lead.
Heavy showers during the first quarter impacted on the quality of football, but the two sides playing to keep within striking distance of the top four managed an entertaining first half given the conditions.
Collins, Arnold and McLean were towers of strength in the Demon backline and Melbourne's best were Cordner, Albiston and Collins.
The win snapped a streak of five straight wins for North over the Demons.
