A fortnight after kicking two goals in a match, and a week after booting a record score, the Demons split the difference by kicking 21 goals and still losing. Against St Kilda, they were undone by one of their own favourite sons. 1982 Brownlow Medal winner Brian Wilson had retired at the end of the previous season, but was lured back into the game by the Saints during the off-season. The third of his seven games for them, his 250th across four clubs, was easily the best, with a match-winning six goals.

Wilson had plenty of support from teammates. After a first quarter where Greg Healy carried on where he'd left off against Fitzroy, the Saints' midfield took over, setting up nine goals in the second term. Melbourne held Stewart Loewe and the St Kilda talls, but were beaten so badly in the midfield that they couldn't help but concede eventually.

Healy's day took a terrible turn later when he was carried off with a serious knee injury, ending his season after three matches. With Rod Owen suffering a corked thigh, there was further speculation about extending the interchange bench to three players.

Four goals down at the last change, the Demons rallied late but fell short. Wilson who kicked the sealer and celebrated with his familiar 'arms to the sky' pose. Melbourne had chances to get back in the game but wasted their opportunity with wayward kicking late in the game.

John Northey admitted he had misused Brett Lovett, first in a tagging role, then at full back on Wilson.

Best were Wight, Bennett and T. Viney. (Paul Bryce)) made his MFC debut as a late replacement for Garry Lyon who had a groin injury.
