Essendon win by 20 points
Vern Daniel (2nd game)
Despite rain and mud covering the ground, Melbourne and Essendon played out a surprisingly high quality game but the visitors came out on top. In the end Essendon won relatively comfortably, but Melbourne made them earn it.
The Reds kicked the first goal of the game, and Essendon's forwards appeared rattled but by the quarter time break they were four points in front. Melbourne took the lead back early in the second quarter, but it was the only scoring shot they managed for the term.
The rain came in earnest after half time, leaving the ground in a terrible state for football but the wet, heavy ball didn't stop Coutie scoring a place kick goal from 50 yards. They got a second not long after and scores were level again. The game seemed to be swinging in favour of Melbourne but Essendon got a late goal to take the lead back.
With the margin six points at the last break the game was anybody's, but Essendon dominated the scoring until the last five minutes of the match when Melbourne got their seventh goal.
Best were Strong, Pearce and Monk. Fitzpatrick was injured early in the game and while he played the rest of the match he was almost useless.
