Needing a win to keep in touch with the five Melbourne shot themselves in the foot at the SCG with a loss to the Swans.
Sydney jumped to a six goal lead in the first quarter, but the Demons fought desperately to cut the margin to four points in the final term. The Swans steadied to win and denied Melbourne a place in the five - they would have jumped in had they won by 16 points or more.
It was Barassi's 1977 North Melbourne premiership full-back Daryl Sutton who was chief destroyer with six goals in the forward line.
Barassi conceded that there was now only a chance of getting into the five if his side played better and other results went their way. He said seven of his players had “shockers” in the first term. His final verdict on the game was “They were too good; we were too bad”.
Best were Flower, Johnson and Smith. Moore suffered a bruised back and Richards bruised ribs.
