A tiny crowd turned up to the see the match, but those who were present witnessed one of the upsets of the season. The 11-3 Essendon, second on the ladder and battling with Carlton for top spot, allowed the 2-12 Reds to get out to a lead of almost four goals and could never peg them back. Several Essendon players rested to get fit for a big game against the Blues a week later, which backfired on them.

Melbourne registered three behinds in a row to start the game, but they soon got their accuracy in check and racked up five goals from ten scoring shots in the first quarter. Essendon attacked early in the second but only managed points, and Melbourne soon had a sixth on the board.

Essendon had only themselves to blame, after quarter time they kicked 2.16, but it wasn't just their bad goalshooting which cost them but their general play was poor while Melbourne found their feet for one of the rare occasions of the season.

The home side resumed with purpose in the third quarter. They cut the gap back to 22 points and had several shots in the last quarter but continued to miss shots on goal and it cost them.

Best were Pearce, Harris and Robertson.
