A last start win breathed hope into Melbourne's season, and they kept up their outside hopes of making the final six by beating an Essendon side coming off five consecutive wins. Allen Jakovich was his side's only multiple goalscorer but booted 8.6, almost half their scoring shots. The Bombers arrived as the second highest scoring side in the league but struggled to break through the Demon defence. Full forward Paul Salmon was benched during the third quarter.
Melbourne by seven at half-time before Jakovich kicked five goals after the break. Kevin Sheedy shuffled his forward line at three-quarter time and the Bombers got within four points early in the last quarter before Melbourne kicked away with five in a row.
Neil Balme called it "the game of the year for us"
Best were G. Lovett, Jakovich and Viney. Darren Kowal was concussed when struck by Bradley Plain, who was subsequently reported.
