Melbourne win by 6 points
Melbourne's chances of playing in the finals had been dealt a significant blow the previous Saturday, leaving them three games outside the four - but whatever slim chances they had of appearing in the finals were kept alive in a narrow win over the Tigers.
Melbourne were lucky not to kick themselves out of the match, having 11 more scoring shots but only winning by a goal after kicking seven goals to two in the final term. Richmond were unlucky to lose and not have the chance to take top spot on the ladder despite having kicked one more goal.
The wasteful Reds were in front deep into the last quarter until Richmond kicked their third goal from close range, before the Tigers kicked away in the second on the back of more ragged attacking by the home side.
Best was Niven. La Fontaine was treated for a bruised leg. 19th man was Bennett.
Melbourne 10.11 d. Richmond 7.25
