Port Adelaide 0.2, 0.4, 0.5, 0.5
Melbourne 2.1, 2.1, 3.2, 3.3

Melbourne win by 3 goals

Goalkickers: Kelly 1, Aitken 1, Wilson 1

Melbourne opened their tour of South Australia against a weakened Port side. The locals turned up half an hour late with only 14 players, and had to use six substitutes. Melbourne put on two goals with the wind before their makeshift side could gel, but still Port missed two easy opportunities for goals late in the first quarter.

In deteriorating conditions as rain started to fall, the locals did better in the second quarter. They held Melbourne scoreless but could only manage two behinds. Wind dropped off and heavier rain fell while the visitors managed the only goal of the quarter to take an insurmountable lead.

Melbourne won with better ruck play, little marks and handballing but their kicking was poor throughout the day. They had 15 shots in total, while Port had 10 but the South Australians only managed one behind after half time.

Due to the late start the game finished in the dark, before the alloted time had finished. Some Port players had left the field before the game was called off.

Best were McKenzie, O'Loughlin and Fry.
