Desperate to try and find some players for the future in the middle of their horrific comeback season Melbourne named four debutantes, and at half time of the game on a greasy ground against their next door neighbours it looked an inspired move. A 3.3 to 0.4 term had left them with an 11 point lead at the long break, and despite Richmond getting on top in the third Melbourne went into the final quarter just six points behind. The Tigers lost a player to a broken shoulder but improved nevertheless as Melbourne's side - featuring 10 returned servicemen - tired.

The two sides were both also-rans for season 1919 and playing purely for pride. It was Richmond who got the win over their local rivals, running away with four goals in the last term when they found accuracy for the first time all day.

McKenzie, Shelton and Walker were best.
