Collingwood win by 6 points
Melbourne had suffered a heavy defeat on the opening day of the season, and on a dry day that wouldn't have been out of place in summer they almost made amends against Collingwood. The Magpies were missing players, but Melbourne had Parkin, McClelland and Drane out as well.
In a high standard game the only minor difference between the two sides was slightly superior handballing by the visitors. Collingwood opened with the only, goal of the quarter and scored another in the second quarter to retain the lead despite Melbourne kicking three.
The system of the home side was lacking throughout the day, and it was only the quality of the individual players which kept them in the game until the last quarter when they played their best football of the day. The margin was reduced to a point before the Pies kicked the sealer.
Best were Coutie, Conquest and Langley.
