The game started 15 minutes late due to a train carrying 300 Melbourne supporters being delayed on its way from Melbourne, and as such it ended in near darkness. It was fortunate for them that the game was held for them as Melbourne had its best play of the day in the first half, kicking two of the first three goals before conceding three late to go into the first six points behind.

A wind blew across the ground during the first half, keeping much of the play on one of the wings but it died down noticeably after half time. It was then that the locals took over as Melbourne tired badly. Geelong had to protect a number of players in the second half due to injury but the Reds were unable to capitalise.

Best were Tompkins, Fairbairn and Robertson.
