A ruck-rover/defender who joined the club from Horsham, Miller spent all of 1960 in the reserves but once he broke into the seniors he played finals in his first three years. He was first used as a ruck-rover and then as a defender, then in late 1961 played as second ruckman while resting in defence.

After dropping out of the side with a hamstring injury after Round 9, 1964, Miller didn't force his way back in. He was named an emergency for the Grand Final but wasn't required. After 16 further games in 1965 he retired.

After his football career ended Miller received a Masters of Law at the University of California and served as an associate professor of law in Canada. He then became a human rights officer for the United Nations in New York and served in a variety of legal roles at Monash University. He joined the Demons board in 1971 and served until the end of 1974.

In 1979 Miller was elected as the ALP member for the lower house seat of Prahran and served until 1985 when he contested an upper house seat but lost to his Liberal opponent.
