Joined along with twin brother Henry in 1971 but soon returned to the amateurs after being left on the bench in ((Reserves). In 1972 he played Reserves for Prahran in the VFA, before being promoted to the senior list for 1973. He played 20 Reserves games in total.

Both Michael and Henry represented Australia in athletics at the 1973 Maccabiah Games in Israel.

In 1973 he rejoined Ajax. He took over as captain in 1975 and won that year's E section best and fairest. That year he became the first E Section player to be chosen to play in the Victorian amateur representative side. It was one of five club best and fairests, in every grade from B to E. He captained the side to the 1975 E and 1979 B Grade flags.

Ritterman then coached St Bernards in 1982 and 1983.
