It was said that Dockett pretended to be a right footer in front of Melbourne scouts to try and get to his chosen club, Richmond but Checker Hughes cornered him at his first training session and told Dockett that they knew he was a left footer after all. He then switched to his preferred foot and won himself a spot with the Demons.

Dockett could also have pursued cricket as a career, as a member of the Richmond district side he also played for the Victorian Colts from 1938 to 1940 but went to war and served with the 14/32nd Battalion in Papua New Guinea. He played two Seconds games before joining the army, and when he returned from New Guinea he took up football instead.

He played 18 games, including a losing Grand Final in his first year and won a premiership in the Grand Final replay of 1948. Dockett won the Best and Fairest in 1949, missing just one game, and was selected on a half-back flank in the Sporting Life "Team of the Year" of 1950. He had a reputation as one of the paciest players on the team.

Dockett informed the committee of his retirement before Round 9, 1951, citing a new business he had bought and the desire to give his spot to a younger player. He played the next two matches before hanging up his boots. He had originally tried to resign early in the season but had been convinced to go on. In the 1952 pre-season he assisted with training under new coach Norm Smith.

Coached the Richmond Thirds from 1954 to the end of 1957.

He also played district cricket with Richmond, and in 1948/49 averaged more than 50 as an opener.
