The driving force behind the Redlegs coterie who replaced Donald Duffy as president upon his retirement in 1974.
Mitchell was a former captain of Melbourne Grammar and coached Old Melburnians to a premiership in the A Grade amateurs.
Resigned as club president at the end of the 1978 wooden spoon season, citing family and business reasons. He had recently had a change of ownership in his family business.
He was replaced as president by Wayne Reid but later returned to the club board.
After serving on the committee of the MCC from 1972 he was named vice-president in 1985 and President in 1992. He served in the role until November 1997.
In 2000 he was one of the committee that chose the MFC Team of the Century.
